It appeared in the XIIth century linked in memory of the Big Holy Martyr Theodore Stratelates, a warrior, who in the IVth century was beheaded by his faith in Jesus Christ. The icon was taken to Kostroma in the siege of Tartar. The Russian militia went out to find them, taking before of them the Icon. In the struggle body to body, a mysterious rider appeared, his layer was waved in the breeze, and his golden shield shone with a light that blinded the Tartar ones. The Russians admitted to see the Big Holy Martyr Theodore Stratelates. Full of fear, they left the battlefield and Kostroma was saved.
