A great nimbus surrounds Juan’s face, framed by two strands of hair on each shoulder, and by the long locks of a flowing beard. John holds in his hands a scroll and a chalice with a blessed little naked Christ, a suggestive image of the Eucharistic bread (amnos) inspired by the words of the prophet at the Jordan: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”.
