He was born in Cesarea (Asia Minor) towards 330 and studied in Constantinople and in Athens. There he met Gregory Nacianceno. After his return one turned Capadocia (356), received the baptism and lived through the monastic experience in Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Mesopotamia. John the Crysostom , called ?golden mouth? for his oratory, was born in Antioch in 350 and, after a stage like hermit, he became a priest and then bishop. In 398 he was nominated a patriarch of Constantinople. His clash with the emperor cost him the exile, first to Armenia and later to Ponto, on the banks of the Black sea, where he died because of the fatigue.
