It appeared in the 12th century, linked to the memory of the Great Holy Martyr Theodore Stratelates, a warrior, who in the 4th century was beheaded for his faith in Jesus Christ. The icon was brought to Kostroma in the siege of the Tartars. The Russian militia set out to find them, bringing the Icon before them. In hand-to-hand fighting, a mysterious horseman appeared, his cloak flapping in the breeze, and his golden shield flashed with a light that blinded the Tartars. The Russians acknowledged seeing the Great Holy Martyr Theodore Stratelates. In fear, they left the battlefield and Kostroma was saved.
