According to the tradition it is one of the icons painted by Saint Luke. It was taken from Jerusalem to Constantinople in the V century. In 1383, the fishermen of the lake Ladoga (Novgorod) saw appearing on the waters of the lake a radiant light. The Virgin decided that his image should leave Constantinople as a precaution against the fall of the Byzantine Empire. After appearing in several villages, it remained in the city of Tichvin.
