Crucifixion: In the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the Adam’s Chapel, features a crack in the rock. That crack is considered a testimony to the earthquake that the Gospel describes the death of Christ. According to legend, the skull of Adam was buried there with three grains from the tree of earthly paradise in its mouth, from which the Cross was born. The cross springs from the skull.

Descent: Joseph of Arimathea obtained authorization from Pilate to remove the body of Christ and bury it. Mary kisses her son in the wounds, Nicodemus removes the nails and Joseph of Arimathea lowers the lifeless body.
