According to the tradition it is one of the icons painted by Saint Luke. It was taken from Jerusalem to Constantinople in the Vth century. In 1383, one fishermen of the lake Ladoga (Novgorod) saw appearing on the waters of the lake a radiant light. The Virgin decided that her image should leave Constantinople as a precaution against the fall of the Byzantine Empire. After appearing in several villages, it remained in the city of Tichvin. The icon survived to numerous fires.
